ExCeL London is one of the busiest exhibition venues in Europe. It sits on the Royal Victoria Dock in East London and runs around 500 events a year, from small trade shows to some of the biggest exhibitions in the country. If you’ve booked space here, or you’re thinking about it, this guide covers the practical things worth knowing before you commit.
We install stands at ExCeL regularly, so a lot of this comes from doing the work rather than reading a brochure.
The basics about the venue
ExCeL opened in 2000 and expanded in 2010. It gives you about 100,000 square metres of flat floor space, split across halls that can be divided up to suit the size of each show. The halls are column free, which matters more than people expect. You don’t have to design your stand around pillars getting in the way of your layout or your sightlines.
The ceilings are high, around 10 metres, so there’s plenty of room if you want a tall structure, hanging signage or a double deck stand. The building also has its own International Convention Centre attached, which is why you’ll often see a big conference running alongside the exhibition halls.
Getting there and getting in
Transport is the strong point at ExCeL. The venue has three DLR stations along its length, plus an Elizabeth line station that connects to central London in about 15 minutes and to Heathrow in around 45. London City Airport is five minutes away, which helps if you’ve got international visitors or team members flying in.
For drivers, there’s parking for roughly 3,700 cars on site, reached from the A13. If you’re bringing your own materials or products, this is useful, but be realistic about traffic and loading times on build day. Central London traffic near the docks can be slow, and the venue runs to strict loading schedules.
That last point is the one that catches people out. ExCeL, like every major venue, gives you a set window to load in and load out. Miss it and you’re paying for delays or scrambling to get set up before doors open. When we handle a build here, we plan the logistics around that window so it doesn’t become your problem.
Shell scheme or space only?
When you book space at ExCeL, you’ll usually choose between a shell scheme and space only.
A shell scheme comes with basic walls, a name board and sometimes lighting. It’s cheaper and simpler, and it’s fine for a first show if your budget is tight. The downside is that it looks like every other shell scheme stand in the hall unless you do something with it.
Space only means you get bare floor and nothing else. You pay for the space, then build whatever you want on it. This gives you far more control over how your stand looks and how visitors move through it. Space only stands often sit in better positions on the floor too. For a venue this size, standing out is worth thinking about.
If you’re not sure which fits your budget and your goals, that’s exactly the kind of thing worth asking about before you book. The right answer depends on your show, your space and what you’re trying to get out of it.
What a busy venue means for your stand
ExCeL holds tens of thousands of visitors at once. That’s a lot of foot traffic, which is good, but it also means people walk past quickly and have plenty of other stands competing for attention. A stand that works here is one that reads clearly from a distance. Your name, what you do and a reason to stop, all visible in a couple of seconds.
Lighting matters more than most first timers realise. The halls are large and the general lighting is functional, not flattering. A stand with its own lighting looks sharper and more professional, and it pulls the eye. Graphics need to be big and simple. Small text and busy designs get lost.
How Exhibition Stand Hire handles ExCeL for you
Because we work at ExCeL often, we know the access routes, the loading times and the venue rules. That knowledge saves you time and avoids the small mistakes that cost money on the day.
The process is straightforward. You tell us the show, your stand size and what you want to achieve. We design the stand and show you a 3D visual so you can see exactly what you’re getting. Once you approve it, we build it, transport it, install it on site and remove it after the show. You turn up to a finished stand and focus on your visitors.
You don’t need to learn the venue’s rules, chase contractors or worry about whether your build will be ready in time. That’s our job.
Thinking about exhibiting at ExCeL?
If you’ve got a show coming up at ExCeL London, tell us the dates and your floor space. We’ll come back with ideas, a 3D visual and a clear quote, with no obligation to go ahead. It’s the simplest way to see what your stand could look like and what it would cost.
